Tips for getting into art school?

Bibi Tyron: Hi my names James I'm a Illustration major and a Student Ambassador here at Savannah College of Art and Design, In conjunction to the above answer, a portfolio is a great idea and is advised, though it is not actually required for the undergraduate admissions process. The portfolio is counted as part of the supplementary materials, which applicants may submit to enhance their admission files, and be considered for an artistic scholarship. In terms of organizing and selecting works for your portfolio there are a lot of things you can do and include: First off get feed back from your peers, art teachers, this will help you narrow down the amount of work you want to present, bear in mind that you should present your best works, keep it personal, all your own work, no work copied from film, television, photographs, magazine/book illustrations or other sources. When you can, show work form direct observation. Even if you think its not a great e! xample of your work, the professors working through the portfolios will be able to see that you might have missed. Include works that show your grasp of form, color balance, contrast and composition. Take care into the presentation of your portfolio, even when you are submitting the CD you can arrange the files by renaming them to they appear the way you want it to be seen. Start off strong, show your understanding through out and always leave your best work till last.Try and start developing your portfolio now especially if you are planning to come to one of our SCAD days we offer both Portfolio Preparation workshops as well as Portfolio Counseling to go through your work with an actual Faculty. If you need more information on applying to SCAD or the constructing a portfolio i have left some links below:http://www.scad.edu/forms/pdf/HowToPrepareAPortfol... http://www.scad.edu/admission/undergraduate/admiss......Show more

Luke Creitz: You need a portfolio w! hich shows originality and artistic skill and also appeals to ! the artistic outlooks of members of the admissions committee. Look at art work displayed on the school's website and at the school if you are able to visit. Remember that very few art school graduates are able to support themselves as artists.
