Coy Tapley: The student is completely incorrect.The Sun is "oblique" to the ozone hole, the rays transit the atmosphere, then proceed on past the Earth, for the most part. The ozone layer forms a hole over the pole that is experiencing late winter / early spring. Visible light hits that bit of atmosphere, which drives photocatalytic ozone decay. But the UV-215 thru UV-280 to be protected from, and the UV-215 and more energetic that makes more ozone, is absorbed in the atmosphere closer to the equator.Global warming is driven by:- increases in greenhouse gases since the early 1700s, that slow the loss of infrared radiation to space.- decreases in the albedo of Earth's surface, as fields are plowed, Earth is paved, and oceans are covered by an oily sheen.Now Global Warming does increase Ozone Depletion, by lofting more water vapor, which depletes ozone by stabilizing NOx.Ozone Depletion does deliver more UV that can only be absorbed by Earth's surface (and DNA of course)! , which does make Earth's surface hotter. But ozone is a greenhouse gas, so the net effect is to increase day-night temperature swings (ignoring what the other greenhouse gases might do to level that back out)....Show more

Rena Pepe: No, the student is not correct. In a way it may seem like they are correct, however. The sun's rays are penetrating the atmosphere, but that is not the main cause.
